چکیده

We analyze the dynamics of an atomic force microscopy AFM cantilever oscillating in liquid at subnanometer amplitude in the presence of tip-sample interaction. We present AFM measurements of oscillatory solvation forces for octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane on highly oriented pyrolitic graphite and compare them to a harmonic oscillator model that incorporates the effect of the finite driving force for a typical AFM configuration with acoustic driving. In contrast to the general belief, we find—in both experiments and modeling—that the tip-sample interaction gives rise to a pronounced signature in the phase at driving frequencies well below resonance. © 2008 American Institute of Physics. Sensitivity Analysis of Frequency Response of Atomic Force Microscopy in Liquid Environment on Cantilever's Geometrical Parameters

In this paper, the non-linear dynamic response of rectangular atomic force microscopy in tapping mode is considered. The effect of cantilever’s geometrical parameters (e.g., cantilever length, width, thickness, tip length and the angle between the cantilever and the sample's surface in liquid environment has been studied by taking into account the interaction forces. Results indicate that the r...

Analytical model of the nonlinear dynamics of cantilever tip-sample surface interactions for various acoustic atomic force microscopies

An analytical model is developed of the interaction of the cantilever tip of an atomic force microscope with the sample surface that treats the cantilever and sample as independent systems coupled by a nonlinear force acting between the cantilever tip and a volume element of the sample surface. To maintain equilibrium, the volume element is subjected to a restoring force from the remainder of t...

Energy dissipation in multifrequency atomic force microscopy

The instantaneous displacement, velocity and acceleration of a cantilever tip impacting onto a graphite surface are reconstructed. The total dissipated energy and the dissipated energy per cycle of each excited flexural mode during the tip interaction is retrieved. The tip dynamics evolution is studied by wavelet analysis techniques that have general relevance for multi-mode atomic force micros...

Minimizing tip-sample forces in jumping mode atomic force microscopy in liquid.

Control and minimization of tip-sample interaction forces are imperative tasks to maximize the performance of atomic force microscopy. In particular, when imaging soft biological matter in liquids, the cantilever dragging force prevents identification of the tip-sample mechanical contact, resulting in deleterious interaction with the specimen. In this work we present an improved jumping mode pr...

Cantilever dynamics in AFM

Dynamic atomic force microscopy, in essence, consists of a vibrating microcantilever with a nanoscale tip that interacts with a sample surface via shortand long-range intermolecular forces. Microcantilevers possess several distinct eigenmodes and the tip-sample interaction forces are highly nonlinear. As a consequence, cantilevers vibrate in interesting, often unanticipated ways; some are detri...
